FADE IN:

EXT. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – DAY

The scene opens on the front doors of an elementary school. Birds are chirping and the sun is shining. The school bell rings and children burst through the doors and run down the stairs of the school building screaming in excitement.

PETER, GENE, and ACE walk out of the doors. PAUL pushes his way through the crowd to catch up with them.

PAUL

(shouting)

Hey guys, wait up.

Paul catches up with the rest of the group.

GENE

Hey Paul, so what’s up this weekend?

PAUL

My family’s going camping in Michigan.

ACE

That sounds like fun.

PAUL

Fun? Fishing, hiking, campfires? Are you kidding me? My dad will probably want to lay out in a field somewhere and just stare at the stars.

ACE

Stargazing? Far out man.

PAUL

Hey, if anyone wants to come you’re more than welcome. Anything to get out of family time.

ACE

I’d like to get out of the burbs, check out the stars. Count me in.

PETER

I’m up for it. Could use some time away from the old lady.

ACE

Your mom?

PETER

Yeah, Becky’s been all up in my business lately.

GENE

Is Christine going?

PAUL

Yeah, the whole family.

GENE

Then count me in. I wouldn’t mind spending some quality time in the woods with Christine. That chicks got me dizzy.

PAUL

Gross, that’s my sister. Besides, she’s 16. No way you’ve got a shot with a girl in high school.

Gene smiles, clearly lost in his thoughts.

PAUL

Alright everyone, meet at my house tomorrow morning and we’ll hit the road.

EXT. FOREST – DAY

The kids are walking through the forest. Paul is looking at a map. Gene is eating a bag of marshmallows.

ACE

Wow man, that car ride was something. How long was it, 12 hours, 14 hours?

PAUL

90 minutes.

PETER

I can’t take another verse of 100 bottles of beer on the wall man. I’m gonna lose it.

PAUL

I told you guys it was lame.

ACE

It’s all cool as long as we can see some stars tonight.

PAUL

Hey guys, I just realized, we’re only about 20 miles from Detroit.

Peter’s phone rings. Peter picks up the phone for a moment, presses a button and puts the phone back into his pocket.

PAUL

Who’s up for a road-trip tonight?

Peter’s phone rings again. Peter checks his phone again.

PETER

Man, Becky’s really blowin’ up my cell.

ACE

Did you forget to tell your Mom you were going on a trip?

PETER

What’s the big deal? It’s not like we won’t be back tomorrow.

PAUL

Come on guys, this is Detroit Rock City, Motown! Who’s in?

GENE

How are we going to get there? That’s way too far to walk.

PAUL

I can drive my parents car. I watch them doing it all the time. How hard can it be?

GENE

(sarcastically)

Sounds like a really solid plan. So where is Christine’s tent?

PAUL

Seriously, cut it out, it’s not cool.

GENE

You know, she might get a little cold tonight. She might want a house call from the Doctor.

PAUL

Gene! Cut it out.

GENE

All right, all right, I’ll quit talking about it.

Gene smiles to himself and throws a marshmallow into the air and attempts to catch it in his mouth. The marshmallow misses and falls to the grass on the ground. The camera follows the marshmallows down to the grass and then focuses on Gene’s feet as they hit the ground. The world is shown from the perspective of an ant. As Gene’s feet hit the ground they make a huge sound and shake the camera.

EXT. FOREST, ANTHILL – DAY

A tribe of ants on the anthill are looking up in panic at a giant (Gene) as he approaches. The hill shakes with each footstep. Within the tribe YOUNG ANT stands next to ELDER ANT.

YOUNG ANT

Tell us o wise one, what is this terrible beast?

ELDER ANT

It is he, the Thunder God. Make sacrafice. Pray for his mercy.

MONTAGE – GOD OF THUNDER

ELDER ANT

The Thunder God is pleased. Taste the abundance he rains upon us.

The ants eat the marshmallows and continue their wild celebration.

EXT. TENT – NIGHT

The tent is shown from outside. Crickets chirp. An owl hoots.

INT. TENT – NIGHT

The tent is then shown from inside. It is completely black until Paul turns on a flashlight.

PAUL

Ok guys, last chance, who’s ready to go?

GENE

I’m just going to stay here and…um enjoy the umm, wildlife.

ACE

Yeah, I’m out too. I gotta check out some stars.

PETER

Sorry Paul. I’m not feeling the city tonight either, I think I’ll hang back.

PAUL

Fine. If no one is with me then I’ll just have to go it alone.

Paul sneaks out of the tent to his parent’s car.

EXT. FOREST – NIGHT

PETER/ACE

Woh.

Silence for a moment as they take it in.

ACE

I could lay here forever. Just look at all those stars. Around each of them there are planets just like ours. Who knows what’s out there? Who knows what there is to be discovered?

PETER

Man, doesn’t it make you feel small?

ACE

No way. All of this was put here for a reason. It was put here for me, for us. We’ll get there one day, I know it. It blows my mind that we get so caught up in our little problems. If I can get from earth to even the closest of those stars then I can take on anything this world can throw my way.

Peter’s phone ring again.

ACE

Hey man, don’t you think it’s time to take that call?

Peter sighs and picks up the phone.

MONTAGE – BETH

— Peter waving goodbye to his mom as he leaves for school.
— Peter’s mom waving goodbye with a fake smile that collapses as Peter leaves.

PETER

Yeah, but “Becky I hear you callin’” just doesn’t sound as good.

Gene sneaks out of his tent and starts walking towards the tent of Paul’s teenage sister CHRISTINE.

ELDER ANT

The Thunder God is angry at our ways. He will punish us for our gluttony.

Gene blindly walks through the forest and steps in the anthill. The anthill is destroyed. Ants are crying, laying lifeless, or running in panic.

Young Ant holds the lifeless body of a loved one and looks up with anger and defiance.

GENE

Ouch! What the?

Gene’s massive (by comparison) hand descends on Young Ant and smashes him. Young Ant’s lifeless body falls back to the anthill.

ELDER ANT

The Thunder God cries out in pain. He is no god!

Elder ant cradles the body of Young Ant as a his eyes well up with tears.

ELDER ANT

Attack!

All the ants raise their arms and scream and then attack Gene at once.

Gene starts scratching and running through the field in circles as he is bit.

EXT. ROADSIDE – NIGHT
Paul is being shaken, he slowly starts to open his eyes.

BLUES BAND MEMBER

Wake up kid. Come on now, wake up.

PAUL

What? Where am I? What happened?

BLUES BAND MEMBER

You’re in Detroit. You just ran your car straight into that truck over there you crazy little…

PAUL

CHRISTINE

The whole tent is filled with them! Ack, get them off me!

Gene smacks an ant on Christine.

CHRISTINE

Ouch that hurt you little maggot!
